Save the Cosplay, Save the World: Attending Con in Cosplay
One of the main places you will see cosplay would be at an anime convention. These conventions are held in celebration of the Japanese style of art and culture. One of the main and looked forward to events is the cosplay parade. There people enter their costumes into a contest of either craftsmanship or performing a skit.
It has become customary to attend these exciting events in cosplay. Everywhere you look in the area of the convention you find people in costume. It’s fun, exhilarating, and adventuresome. There are still some things you should take into consideration if you plan to attend an anime convention in cosplay.
Some costumes can be hard to function in so you may want to keep that in mind. Ask yourself what you will need to walk around or stand for hours. Such as if you have wings, or anything else protruding beyond the width of your shoulders, you may want to practice walking through doorways or make sure you have someone with you that can help control traffic around you.
Another thing you may want to check on before you attend is to check at what shoes your cosplay has. If you don’t think you can walk around all day with the pair that your character has, consider bringing a secondary pair with you to meander around in.
The horrors of all horror is that accidents do happen! There have been many tragic stories of how cosplays have fallen apart at a convention. It happens but there are a few things you can do to prepare yourself for the inevitable. Keeping a few repair items handy can help. This may consist of the following, which I like to call an Anime Convention Survival Kit.
Survival Bag:
These are things you may want to keep on you in a bag or the such.
~Felt pen (in color of costume or prop)
~Scissors
~Safety pins
~Needle
~Thread
~Stain Removal Stick
~Hair pins
~Compact mirror
~Touch up make-up
~Double sided tape (saved me at a wedding once even!)
All of this can fit into a small bag in whatever you may want to carry around with you. Look into your character and see if you can find a carrying item that would match whom you are trying to portray.
In Room Survival Items:
These are items you may want to keep in the hotel room or where ever you may be staying during the convention.
~Mini glue gun
~Hair spray (can be used as starch on fabric as well)
~Hair dryer
This may help you survive the day out or until you are able to enter your costume in an even. Permanent repairs can be done later on, just keep that in mind and be sure to enjoy the rest of the convention.
