|Cosplay Fetish Academy
Released By: Sekilala/G-Collections
Living with his two hot, twin female cousins while going to high school, Ryouji’s life isn’t terribly complicated. That all is about to change though. When he and his cousin Shana go to visit Yuuki at the shrine where she works, a strange storm brews above them and strikes them with lightning. Well, more accurately it only strikes Ryouji but the effects are still felt on all of them. Don’t ask why, it’s not important. After leaving the shrine, the three of them find out something amazing: the lightning has transported them to a new world where everything is exactly the same except for all the women wear nothing but revealing outfits and cosplay. Again, don’t ask why.
Making the best of their new home, the three of them go about their daily high school lives which includes getting ready for the cultural festival and eventually falling in love. So who is Ryouji going to end up with? The serious, studious Yuuki, the wild airhead Shana, the shy glasses wearing Kotori or the young but still sexy homeroom teacher Maika?
Writing and Story
Getting into Cosplay Fetish Academy isn’t difficult in the least… provided that you’re willing to make some concessions to what you were expecting. First off, disabuse yourself of the notion that this is going to be a story that makes even the slightest amount of sense. Trust me, this isn’t going to be as hard as you might nearly think as the game is going to do it for you within about twenty minutes when only Ryouji gets struck by lightning and yet transports everyone to a brand new world. Second, give up on the idea that CFA is going to make up for this by giving you deep, enriching characters instead. Reality there is that you are going to get extremely fun characters that will make you laugh but about as deep and complex as a glass of water.
Lastly, it would be in your best interest to forget about the ‘cosplay fetish’ portion of the title. There is cosplay in this game but not nearly as much as one might expect. Before starting this game, I made a mental list of all the different sexy cosplays that I wanted to see as I played. Maybe a third of my list was covered by the time I finished and some of those I even had to cheat with by looking at the static characters drawn in the background.
Luckily for everyone here, Cosplay Fetish Academy makes it known pretty quickly that any and all of these things are really the last thing that you should be worried about. Sure, the whole lightning incident happens once and then is largely forgotten about within a day or two. But I mean really, does a premise really have to stick around that long in order to make sense? Probably but ignore that. Instead, do what you should have been doing from the beginning and look at this game exactly for what it is: a school romantic comedy with a touch of cosplay thrown in for spice. Unfortunately, getting through the main body to this game makes that just a bit more difficult than it really should. Like I said, this is not a terribly deep game.
After transferring to the new world, Ryouji will spend most of the game getting to know the various girls while getting ready for the annual cultural festival. Over the course of these few days, Ryouji will get to know them through a variety of over the top situations and a number of misunderstandings that arise.Though to call them misunderstandings is a bit of a stretch as many of them stem from Maika or Yuuki catching him leering at various females that he is around.
Getting into the actual story of the game does take a little bit of time but oddly, it’s not because of the story itself that causes this. The biggest issue that CFS faces is in its characters; these are just very flat characters that fit neatly into their roles. Ryouji spends most of the game being apathetic towards things until he gets a girlfriend at which point he evolves into endlessly horny. The girls that he ends up with aren’t exactly winning personality prizes themselves with Yuuki always staying in the same serious, studious role; Kotori in her shy, timid role and Shana in her bratty selfish role. If anyone in this game evolves beyond their starting point by the end, it’s very subtle.
Despite being light on premise or providing very shallow characters, the one thing that CFA does consistently offer is fun situation comedy. Never relying on silly slapstick, CFA does a great job of letting its characters put themselves into awkward or just plain goofy situations such as Yuuki and Ryouji becoming famous for accidently confessing their love to each other on live television or Kotori accidently breaking her computer by looking up sex tips online.
While the music never stands out for its amazing sound, it was fun to listen to Sekilala create some catchy themes for certain moments. While the artwork or writing may not do a great job of painting the scene, sometimes the music really did make all the difference such as during Shana’s photo shoot. Though there are a few musical choices that do make one wonder such as the odd lullaby theme that plays during Kazumi and Akari’s late night scene or the odd 70′s porn bass beat that plays during Kotori’s scenes.
With the dialogue pretty much locking the characters into one role, it’s rare for the character artwork to do anything to disrupt that to do more than put a character into a new cosplay. As mentioned before, the actual number of cosplays that characters are put into is disappointingly low. Most of the basics will be covered for everyone such as sexy maids, swimsuits, mikos, bunny girls and others. But surprisingly there are quite a few which aren’t covered such as cat girls, nuns, angels, gothic lolitas and others.
In this world though, it’s not necessarily the cosplays themselves that are standard but the amount of skin shown. In this regard, CFA does an amazing job of keeping characters properly dressed… or undressed. While nudity in the main body of the game is almost nonexistent, there is more than enough skin showing to at least make up for that since the girls may as well be naked anyway. Constantly forced into clothes that are little more than a couple of straps and pasties to go over the nipple (because really, let’s have a little modesty here), Yuuki and Shana in particular are quite nicely drawn and create strong eye candy for players to enjoy while going through the release.
With dozens of CG screens to collect, the artwork throughout CFA always manages to retain its playful demeanor. The h scenes are very quite vanilla in terms of exploring anything outside of the norms. The scenes themselves are quite nicely drawn and features great artwork of characters in a variety of poses and positions. If you’re looking for strong kink than you’re going to be out of luck but those with a taste for the simpler things in their artwork will find enough here to be satisfied.
CFA ranks in a very average range for its length with the primary body of the game being played through with a dozen hours or so. From here there are at least a number of different endings to complete. Each girl each get two separate endings, both of which are good endings giving you eight right away. Add in two harem endings that you have an even ten to get through. There is one bad ending but once you start to get through the primary body, each separate ending is fairly easy to navigate through so your odds of finding a good ending are pretty high.
Each path for the girls will add on two to three hours of game play giving you a reason to come back. Ultimately though, you can see everything that you need to see within this game by the end of the weekend if you push your way through.
Cosplay Fetish Academy is not an epic game or shining example from its genre but it never tries to be. While it’s riddled with silly plot holes and shallow characters, this is still a fun excuse to see cute characters in cosplay while going through another romantic school comedy. Instead of focusing on the things that are lacking from this game, enjoy the things that it does well and spend a weekend with Yuuki and Shana. This isn’t something that fans absolutely must own but when you need something to do while waiting for the next A-list title to add to your collection, this isn’t a bad option.
