Trailer Roundup: Durarara, Trigun, Katanagatari and More
So earlier this week a couple of trailers were posted online. Of course, I didn’t have time to write about them right away but I shrugged that off. ‘That’s alright,’ I told myself ‘It’s been such a slow news month so putting the trailer roundup off for a day or two won’t hurt anything.’ Then Friday came and everyone and their uncle decided to post their newest footage. Get comfortable, this is going to be another long one.
More after the cut
One of the upcoming winter premieres that has been generating the most buzz is Durarara. Based off the light novels by Ryohgo Narita (Baccano), the story follows a high school student moving into the Ikebukuro neighborhood of Tokyo. Despite being warned about staying away from certain things, Mikado manages to get caught up in supernatural events anyway.
With the series premiering on January 7th, it seems that there are those who want to make sure everyone has a chance to at least look at it before it premieres. At the beginning of the week, a 12 minute streaming story introduction was posted to the official website. Naturally the preview has no subtitles but if you want to see the look of the series or hear the opening theme, it still makes for an interesting watch. It looks like the story is going to retain some of the dark comedy tone that people became accustomed to in Baccano. If you don’t want to spend twelve minutes trying to understand a language you happen to not speak, there’s a 30 second trailer has been posted to the website as well.
Now then, who wants to see more Trigun: Bad Lands Rumble? After the movie was officially announced fans began their anxious wait for their first real look at the new feature and it’s finally arrived. Madhouse has posted a 37 second trailer (click the black movie button in the middle) to the official website and their brand new NicoNico account.
Speaking of Madhouse, two extended preview clips for Mai Mai Miracle were posted to the Avex Network YouTube page today lasting for five (link takes you 46 seconds in which is when the promos end) and six minutes respectively. Both clips run without subtitles but finally give a really good glimpse at the movie’s art style. I really like the softness in the character designs which feels like it would add a real sense of levity to the story. I doubt I’ll ever get to sit down and watch this one but maybe someone will decide 2010 needs an extra seemingly heartwarming animated children’s movie.
Finally, the official website for Katanagatari based on a 12 volume novel from the creator of the hugely popular Bakemonogatari, NisiOisin, has posted three trailers to the official website. To be fair, all three trailers are essentially the same thing with just a few hints towards characters and art. The story takes place in medieval Japan and follows Shichika Yasuri on his quest to obtain the final twelve swords forged by a master swordsmith. Unlike the previous series based on his work, Katanagatari will be animated by White Fox (Tears to Tiara) and be told in twelve one hour specials throughout 2010.
And that wraps up this trailer roundup, what looks good to you?

One thing that catching me right away is the art style in Katanagari. It’s really unlike anything that I’ve seen in recent memory. It’s not ugly but does anyone think that this is something that fans will be able to get used to seeing?
Katanagari – Hm, I definitly agree with you, that the Art Style is “unique”. But I think if it delivers in the Story Department people will watch it. Works for One Piece, right? ^^
But I kind of like that drawing style, so I will probably check this show out.
