2ch Names Most Unforgivable Acts Against Anime Humanity

Recently over at 2ch, users created a new thread in order to decide on the most unforgivable acts in anime history. Naturally the first reply was to nominate the Nagi-sama non virgin scandal from last year. Luckily people who actually have a brain ignored that answer and started submitting some interesting choices:

~ Gurren Lagann Episode 4

~ Nice Boat School Days Finale

Nice Boat!

~ Katsukawa Katsushi sues Nippon TV, Tatsunoko Pro and Kuri Ippei for allegedly plagiarizing character designs.

~ Endless Eight (naturally)

~ The 17th episode of Ronin Warriors is accidently aired two weeks in a row causing the series to be shortened by one episode.

~ Hetalia forced off air by Korean protests (yeah, that was pretty lame)

I think my favorites are the suggestions that the mere existence of certain series is a crime against anime humanity. Some of the unlucky series to get that honor included Idolmaster, Final Fantasy: Spirits Within (wow really? It was a bad movie but an unforgivable act?), Rebirth of Buddah and Minami ke: Okawari. But really, if we’re going to be over dramatic and hyperbolic about this let’s really go for it.

Rebirth of Buddah

So what do you think are the most unforgivable acts in anime history? For me, Geneon taking their ball and going home in 2007 is one of my big ones. Most of 2009 for Kyoto Animation and Kadokawa still bugs me (Yes, I understand the whole marketing thing but still… pain in the ass!). Then I think I would top off the list with the existence of Debutante Detective Corps, Sailor Moon Super S and the lack of a Sailor Stars or Higurashi: Kai license and a second season for Princess Nine.

2ch Picks Bakemonogatari as Best Series of 2009… Shock and Awe

Ah the chill in the air, lights going up everywhere, hearing the same fifty songs over and over again until you want to hang yourself which all means one thing. Tis the season for top ten lists! Everyone seems to be working on their own year end lists (I’ll probably even write one or two myself before the end of the month) and that includes 2ch.

The residents of 2ch have made their votes known and ranked their top 10 anime of the year 2009. For the most part, the list reads pretty much as you’d expect. The top five are dominated by quality (with only a dash of moe inserted by Saki) with the bottom half receiving a similarly varied result. I can’t really disagree with many of the rankings here; Bakemonogatari is an easy pick for number 1 though I might have replaced Kimi ni Todoke and TM8. The full ten are listed below the cut, numbers in parenthesis are the number of votes it got from fans.

Dengeki Has Their Say on Summer Anime

Tell Me You Love Me!

Tell Me You Love Me!

If a follow up to a post put up last month, the readers of Dengeki Magazine in Japan were asked to rank their top ten summer anime with somewhat surprising results. Ranked from best to worst, the entries listed also have their rank in the before summer ‘Most Anticipated Titles’ poll:

1.Bakemonogatari (4th most anticipated)
2. Saki
3. Fullmetal Alchemist
4. Canaan (5)
5. Umineko no Naku Koro ni (2)
6. Valkyria Chronicles
7. GA Geijutsuka Art Design Class (7)
8. Dragonball KAI
9. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (9)
10. Requiem for the Phantom

So out of the top ten most anticipated summer titles only five titles actually made it into the top ten list post summer, plus only two of the titles actually managed to live up to reader’s expectations causing a rise from their previous rankings. It seems that Beatrice and the rest of the Umineko cast didn’t have the staying power that viewers wanted while TM8 and GA Art Design Class amounted to pretty much exactly what viewers wanted/expected.

But just for the sake of giggles, comparing the top ten lists from 2ch and Dengeki provides a slightly different perspective:

1.Bakemonogatari                                                           1. Bakemonogatari
2. Saki                                                                                   2. Saki
3. Fullmetal Alchemist                                                  3. Taisho Yakyuu Musume
4. Canaan                                                                            4. Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
5. Umineko no Naku Koro ni                                      5. Sora no Manimani
6. Valkyria Chronicles                                                  6. Aoi Hana
7. GA Geijutsuka Art Design Class                           7. Spice and Wolf II
8. Dragonball KAI                                                          8. Haruhi Suzumiya
9. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0                                              9. Hayate no Gotoku
10. Requiem for the Phantom                                  10.  GA Geijutsuka Art Design Class

Comparing the two lists, it seems as though a much greater variety of anime was chosen for the 2ch list. While the Dengeki list is filled with action and moe, the 2ch list has more artistic titles such as Aoi Hana, Spice and Wolf II and Tasisho Yakyuu Musume remaining strong all the way through to the end. On the other side, at least half the list are action series with the remaining slots going to re-broadcasts such as Dragonball Kai and FMA: Brotherhood. That can mean a lot of things to a lot of different people so I won’t try to extrapolate some deep meaning from two silly top ten lists. I will however take some comfort knowing that anime geeks both online and off can agree on one thing: Bakemonogatari is the awesome.
