Trailer Roundup: Space Races, Swords and Boobs, Love Live and New PA Works
Hana Saku Iroha: P.A. Works (True Tears, CANAAN, Angel Beats) has announced that for their 10th anniversary they will be working on a series titled Hana Saku Iroha. The story centers on a 16 year old Tokyo girl who begins working at a hot springs inn while trying to decide on her future. While there she’ll have coming of age adventures with other girls who are also undecided about their fates. The first trailer doesn’t feature any animation footage but does have character designs from Mel Kishida (Sora no Woto).
Hyakka Ryouan Samurai Girls: Wow, we’re only just entering August and the fall trailers are already popping up. Studios sure are moving fast this year! Anyways, from ARMS (Queen’s Blade, Kite) comes a new and very censored trailer for their fall action series, Samurai Girls. Adapted from the light novels the story takes place in an alternative present where the Tokugawa shogunate never lost power and kept Japan isolated. At a military academy, girls fight to keep order and suppress insurrection amongst the students. – The action, fan service and alternative history angle really reminds me of Strike Witches only without the heaps of moe and more pants.
Love Live: Anime meets American (Japan?) Idol had its second trailer posted on the Lantis YouTube channel. The series debuts in the coming weeks and will feature moe girls singing and dancing while fans vote on which girls they want to see stay on the series and which ones to vote off. The new trailer is only 17 seconds long but I should warn you now that the moe coming out of it is overwhelming. – Fans voting for moe girls = epic moe internet wars!
Redline: Finally, SIX new trailers have been posted to the official Redline YouTube channel including the 2 minute English trailer posted below. Well, I say English but it’s still mostly Japanese besides the odd announcer at the beginning who I kept expecting to say ‘Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! The epic space race to end ALL space races!’ but never did. – Eh, I want to see this movie but to say I’m excited to watch it would be a huge fib.
And that’s it for today! So what are you excited to watch? Samurai Girls looks interesting but I already worry that it’s just going to be girls swinging swords and boobs around (and judging from that trailer I’m not really sure which ones will be flung around more). I was once interested in Love Live but even I think it’s going to be difficult to swallow that much moe at once. What looks interesting to you?
American Idol Meets Anime? Love Live Debuts in August
Briefly mentioned when the teaser site was originally opened, new details have finally been made public for the upcoming Love Live. A joint project between animation studio Sunrise, music subsidiary label Lantis and magazine Dengeki G’s; essentially the project is going to feature a number of animated school girls competing to be the new school idol and I’m pretty sure singing and dancing will be involved. Fans will decide where the competition goes by voting on their favorites and even have a hand in picking their outfits, accessories, etc through online and mobile voting. The project will officially launch on August 25th with a CD/DVD bundle but advance copies will be sold at Comiket 78 in the middle of the month.
So basically this is Moe Japan Idol with virtual school girls. Not only do otaku get to vote their favorite girl further into the series but they get to vote on how she dresses as well? I’d like to see American Idol try to give that kind of power to their voters! Though are otaku going to start demanding credit when they manage to vote their choice into the winning spot? I’m assuming that there will be a winner and that we’ll all be listening to their generated bubblegum J-Pop soon afterwards.

Playing Catch Up on June 3rd: Would You Do It for An Ecchi Princess Lover OVA?
I’ve realized today that these Catch Up posts, completely by accident, have become a fairly regular weekly staple to the site. I enjoy writing them and it’s nice to be able to catch everyone up in one lump post so hopefully everyone keeps enjoying them in the future. Not a lot of new anime to talk about this week but the summer season is right around the corner. Got any early picks for what looks good?
New Anime
Love Live! : A joint project between Sunrise, Lantis and Dengeki G’s magazine there are no details beyond the image on the teaser site.
The project is planned to branch out into games and anime so I’m expecting something hyper cute that can be merchandised. More details will be revealed at the end of the month.
Dantalian no Shoka : Originally a light novel series from Mikumo Gakuto (Asura Cryin), the hero is a young man named Hughy who has inherited a mansion and book collection from his grandfather. While investigating, he discovers he’s also inherited a young girl who is the gateway to the forbidden phantom books. Each chapter of the story is a new mystery being solved by Hughy, the girl Dalian and the “Bibliotheca of Dantalian”. More details are coming at the end of the month.
Princess Lover OVA : Literally as I was putting the finishing touches on this post, this tidbit of info crossed my path and I knew I had to include it. A two episode OVA has been confirmed for the Ricotta eroge, Princess Lover. The OVA is specifically marked as being explicit and will premiere in September. The animation will be produced by Hoods Entertainment (Seikon no Qwasar, Aki Sora) with character designs from Kazuya Kuroda (Spice and Wolf). – Seriously, I HATED the TV series that premiered last summer so maybe taking it back to its purely ecchi roots wouldn’t be such a bad thing.
I know, three new anime (none of which inspire that much confidence in me) isn’t much to get excited about. But look, Iron Man and Kiss x Sis in the same column! Not a bad way to end things? Right?… Hello? Anyone?
Iron Man Premiere at San Deigo ComicCon: The first Madhouse produced anime based on a Marvel super hero, Iron Man, will be premiering this summer. While it doesn’t hit Japanese airwaves until October, the first episode will be getting an exclusive US premiere at SDCC running July 22nd-25th. Already got your ticket?
Kiss x Sis 5th OAD Confirmed: Proving that it’s not going anywhere for a very long time, Kiss x Sis has been green lit for a fifth single episode OAD that will be included with the 6th manga volume, November 22nd. The ecchi comedy from Bow Ditama centers on Keita, a high school boy dealing with his twin step sisters wanting to sex him on a constant basis and recently premiered as a TV series. If you’re wondering, the TV series is only slightly tamer than the OAD version but follows the manga much closer.
DBZ Kai Does Gonzo Numbers for Nicktoons: Ha! See that? Anime can do numbers in prime time (on cable at least mumble mumble)! Suck on that!… ahem, sorry. In case you didn’t catch the main gist of that outburst, Funimation posted a press release from Nickelodeon on their blog. There’s lots of jargon and numbers to get through but it basically states that thanks to the premiere of DBZ Kai they shattered personal viewing records for the month May. You can read through it all here (pdf link).
Eiko Shimamiya Reveals Thyroid Cancer Diagnosis: Ending on a sad note today, singer Eiko Shimamiya revealed earlier this week via Twitter that she has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer meaning she would have to cancel her concert for later this month. Shimamiya has performed theme songs for every season of Higurashi – When They Cry and the Shakugan no Shana movie. Get well soon!
