Sentai Filmworks February Calendar Includes Needless Release

The title wasn’t meant to be a Needless pun. <- That right there. That’s a Needless pun.

Eve and Adam Head into Action!

Sometimes it’s meant to be. You’re sitting there looking for something to write about and a press release just magically appears in your inbox. Sentai Filmworks have announced their February release schedule which includes the continuations of Eyeshield 21 (Collection 4 due out 2/8) and Gintama (Collection 4 due out 2/22), a You’re Under Arrest Fast and Furious Complete Collection due out 2/1 and the license of comedy action series, Needless.

If you’re unfamiliar with Needless consider yourself one of the lucky ones. Produced by Madhouse and premiering in the summer of 2009, the series takes place in a future where the world has been ravaged. Survival is hard but humans make it even harder by exiling humans called Needless who have contracted a disease giving them special powers. The main character is an orphan named Cruz looking for his family when he meets the odd Eve and her friend, the Kamiya on steroids clone Adam Blade. The series will be released in multiple sets with the first collection being released on DVD and Blu ray on February 15th.

Eh… I know that any license is a good license and I hope this one does well for them. I recall giving this one a chance once and having one of the strongest instinctual rejection reactions ever. It’s a lie to say that I’m looking forward to giving this one another spin though.

Summer Anime Review: Needless Ep 1

Needless - Title ScreenNeedless
Studio:
Madhouse
Premiere Date: 7/2/09
Genre: Sci-Fi/Action

The Story

Sometime in the early 21st century the world will be thrown into another world war. In the middle of all the fighting, Japan will take devastating damage leaving a giant dark spot within the country simply called the ‘Black Spot’. Because it’s just a big black circle on the planet, get it? Besides the ‘Black Spot’, two other things emerged as part of the new world. First is a new species of human referred to as ‘Needless’. These are the humans living with the ‘Black Spot’ who have gained the ability to use any number of powers and abilities. The second is a corporation headquartered within the ‘Black Spot’ called Simeon which has become an intricate part of the world network despite some pretty evil rumors.

When the series opens, the audience is introduced to Cruz, a teenage boy fighting in the resistance against Simeon with his sister. After losing his sister in battle, Cruz manages to escape just far enough to be saved by a mysterious priest named Adam Blade and his friends, Eve and Gido. Simeon isn’t going to let Cruz get away that easily though and sends out their forces to eliminate all who oppose them… such as Cruz, Blade, Eve and Gido.

Otaku Review 2009 Summer Anime Preview! *Updated 6/11*

The summer season of 2009 is interesting on the surface in quite a few different ways. Only a little less than 40 titles will be released from June to August. That number includes specials, OVAs and movies being released which contrasts against at least 30 TV premieres last summer alone.

In terms of content, this is a summer of dreams for fans of manga based stories with up to eight series being adapted from a manga, though that number goes past a dozen when you factor in light, visual and traditional novels as well. Only two series are based off eroge this season but sequels and continuations are alive and well taking up 10 titles of their own.

In terms of studio activity, Madhouse and Studio DEEN are easily the most active of the season with three releases each. On the Madhouse queue are a TV series, a special and a movie while Studio DEEN will be releasing two television series and a series of web shorts. JC Staff and SHAFT aren’t far behind them though with two releases each and a wealth of others filling out the crowd with one each. One studio will even be making their debut their season with GoHands taking a shot at the eroge adaptation ‘Princess Lover‘.

So enough with the introductions, (with apologies to Gia of AnimeVice for adapting her preview style a bit) listed below the cut are as many of the releases that I could find information for. I have tried to make this listing as complete as possible with my resources but I’m not perfect. If you see any missing titles, feel free to drop me a line in the comments and I’ll make sure to get them added.

Titles are listed by premiere dates and will be continuously edited throughout June. Keep checking back for updates as new premiere dates are listed, previews are written and finally to read all the latest reviews as the new series premiere!
