Trailer Roundup: King of Thorn, Arrietty Borrows Everything, Haruhi Season 2

Wow has it been a long time since I’ve been able to write one of these. But now that there’s a little bit of breathing space it’s time to dig into some new trailers. First up is a brand new trailer for the upcoming movie, King of Thorn. For those who haven’t heard me or hundreds of other bloggers re-hash the story, the story takes place in the future after a group of 160 individuals have woken up from cryogenic stasis. After waking up, one girl (who entered stasis while her twin sister was left behind) and the others expect to find scientists who have found a cure for the incurable disease that had begun to ravage the world; what they find instead is a new world filled with monsters and no answers as to what has happened while they were asleep. Directed by Kazuyoshi Katayama (Appleseed, Sentimental Journey, Those Who Hunt Elves) and produced by Sunrise, the movie will finally be released to Japanese theaters on May 1th after spending most of 2009 in the film festival circuit.

The new two minute trailer shows a lot of the same footage from the first trailer but still manages to insert some new animation and the previously unheard theme song. If you’re into dark sci-fi this is a title that you are going to want to watch.

Moving in a MUCH lighter direction, a new teaser was also released this week for the next Studio Ghibli film; Karigurashi no Arrietty. The minute long teaser only shows a bit of animation but leaves two minutes to talk with the composer for the movie, Cecile Corbel, from France. As mentioned previously, Miyazaki won’t actually be directing this one and instead has passed the reigns over to Hiromasa Yoenbayashi who worked his way up from being an animator at Studio Ghibli.

Now, I know that we’ve all grown used to the wonderful scores from Joe Hiasashi but with a new director at the helm, I have no problem with things being shaken up a little. Will it all pay off in the end? That’s for you to decide when it’s released to theaters on July 17th… well, all of you in Japan at least. It’s still a little early to predict when the movie will get a release anywhere else in the world.

Closing this one out, Bandai has uploaded an ‘un-edited’ ASOS Brigade episode to their YouTube channel which finally reveals new details on the Haruhi Suzumiya season 2 license that was announced last month. Yes, I’m aware that this isn’t actually a trailer for the new season but I honestly just didn’t want to write a hundred word post just to tell you that the new season will be released as one complete box set at some point in the future. There’s no release date attached to the box set quite yet but let’s be honest, at this point is anyone taking Bandai release dates seriously?

That’s it for today’s roundup. What’s looking good to you? Leave your thoughts in the comments and discuss away!

Trailer Roundup: Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works

Rin Kicks Ass

Rin reporting to kick someone’s ass!

It’s when I get to come home to things like this that make other days worthwhile. New trailer today… have you already guessed what it is? I tried to be subtle with any hints you may have picked up along the way. But yes, it is the first 50 second trailer for the new Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works movie has been posted to the official website. Premiering January 23rd, the 90 minute movie follows an alternate path from the original visual novel.

Alright, has everyone had a chance to savor the newness? It looks as though all the favorites from the original are returning. The only one really missing was Berserker but a small Iliya insert implies that he’s somewhere in the background. I’m more curious to see Emiya and Archer finally have a go at it. Though is it just me or does the animation look almost exactly like the television series? Hopefully that’s just because I’m not viewing it on a particularly nice monitor but still, I just kind of expected flashier or at least very well polished. Maybe I’m just seeing things. Still excited to see it either way.

Trailer Roundup: Sora no Woto; Moe and Brass Instruments?

You know, other than some Durarara and Ikkitousen stuff earlier this month, this has been a really slow few days for trailers. With only a few weeks left before the New Year I expected at least a bit more of a promotional push for the new season. Anyways, there is one new trailer up on the official website for the A-1 Pictures series Sora no Woto. The trailer is 30 seconds and gives us our first real look at the character designs of the series. Eh, am I the only one getting a bit of a K-ON flashback? I think I was more excited to see this series before I knew about how the moe and brass instruments.

Trailer Roundup: To

To - Cover Art

Only one new trailer (click movie at the bottom of linked page, new trailer will play automatically) was posted in the last couple of days so this is going to be a short trailer roundup. Getting right into things, a new trailer has been posted for the upcoming sci-fi movie To (once again, long O sound so stop pronouncing it as ‘two’). If you’ve forgotten about it since the last trailer, the movie adapts two stories from the 80’s manga 2001 Nights originally created by Yukinobu Hoshino. In the new feature, Sori Fumihiko (Appleseed, Vexille) will be adapting the ‘Symbiotic Planet’ and ‘Elliptical Orbit’ stories with both titles being released for DVD rental on October 2nd. The new two minute trailer is essentially a commercial for the animation and music with some nice looking space action sequences.

Trailer Roundup: Book of Bantorra, Certain Scientific Railgun, Redline

Two more trailers have seen their release since Comiket ended and I’m sure that more will be following in the coming days. Starting with one of the more highly anticipated new shows of the fall season (mostly due to the fact that it’s one of the few series that ISN’T a sequel or spinoff), the second trailer for ‘Tatakau Shisho – The Book of Bantorra‘ has been released (Pick PV2 on the linked page). The first promo made its debut over the weekend but this is fans first streaming look at the new release. The new two minute trailer shows some nice dark animation from David Production whom you might recognize from ‘Code Geass R2′ and Dogs: ‘Bullets & Carnage’ (though was that a cowboy I saw at the 1:04 mark?!?) and Ali Project doing the OP is enough make me want to watch more for now.

Speaking of things that premiered over the weekend, the Comiket PV for the upcoming ‘To Kagaku no Railgun’ has also begun streaming on the official website.

Finally, a 63 second clip from the Madhouse racing movie ‘Redline‘ has been posted to the official Locarno Film Festival page (click extra along the top menu). The movie made its debut at the festival and tells the story about drivers taking part in the world’s deadliest car races. Worth checking out!

Trailer Roundup: Seven New Trailers Released Over the Weekend

Darker than Black Season 2

So I don’t know if anyone else noticed but there were a small mountain of trailers released this weekend. From fall premieres, OVAs and beyond; it seemed as though every time I turned around someone was trying to make me check out their new series. So without further adieu, here are all the trailers released over the weekend put into as a succinct form as I could make:

eden*: Minori has added a new trailer for their upcoming game to the official website. Unfortunately after all the laws passed in the last month or so in Japan, they still refuse to allow anyone from outside Japan view their website. For those lucky people, the same trailer has been made available via YouTube. The game itself will be released 9/18 and features Junji Majima (Daisuke in Kodomo no Jikan, Ryuji in Toradora) in the cast.

Miracle Train: A 104 second promotional video has gone up for the upcoming Miracle Train TV series. The series will premiere this fall and turn four more popular train stations in Japan into charming moe bishounen. I would love to make fun of this series a lot more but it’s hard to deny that if they create a series that turns four more train stations into bubbly bishoujo I’d be all over it so let’s just all accept it and move on, shall we?

Darker Than Black: Ryusei no Gemini : 15 second and 90 second trailers have been uploaded to the official Darker than Black sequel website. Also premiering this fall, the new series takes places a couple of years after the first season ended and involves a young girl with Japanese and Russian ancestry.

So-Ra-No-Wo-To: After the vaguest of introductions a couple of weeks ago, TV Tokyo and Aniplex have revealed that the new series will be the first to kick off its new ‘Anime no Chikara’ (Strength of Anime) project in January. The two minute trailer released this week gives fans its first look at the series which features Mamoru Kanbe as director and animation produced by A-1 Pictures.

Seirei ~ Pure Engagement~: Announced earlier this week, the ecchi action comedy sequel already has a 90 second promotional video attached to the official website. Those who are fans of the series will be pleased to know that all the cast and crew will be returning from the first season so there will be nothing to get in the way of your enjoyment.

King of Thorn: Finishing off the recap; a brand new English language trailer has been uploaded for the upcoming anime movie ‘King of Thorn’. Based on the manga of the same name, the sci-fi movie will be getting a worldwide release sometime next year. After watching that trailer, you better believe that I will be keeping a very close eye on this one!

Trailer Roundup: Sgt Frog, Ponyo, Sensou Douwa

New video clips are alive and well today but let’s start closer to home. Funimation has released the latest trailer for their upcoming box set release of Sgt. Frog Season 1. The long running series has been in the works for awhile and will finally hit store shelves on September 22nd [Right Stuf - Amazon]. The new trailer is only a minute long but really plays up the slapstick comedy of the series. With a very healthy cult following already, it will be fun to watch the reactions of fans that see this one for the first time next month.

For Miyazaki fans out there (which should be all of you), Yahoo Movies is now hosting a three and a half minute behind the scenes feature for the upcoming Ponyo film. In the three minute feature, cast and crew talk about making the dubbed version of the film and the challenges they faced. While watching I actually found one of the most interesting things about the creation of the dub is that the leads (Noah Cyrus and Frankie Jonas) got to record their dialogue together as opposed to the rest of the cast who recorded their dialogue individually. The film premieres in theaters around the country next Friday, August 14th.

Finally jumping back across the Pacific, a new short trailer has been uploaded to the Sensou Douwa: Aoi Hitomi no Onna no Ko no Ohanashi (Wartime Fable: Story of the Little Girl With Blue Eyes) official website. The special premieres in Japan on August 13th and takes place in a small village during WWII where a half Japanese girl faces scorn from her classmates due to her differences in a tough time.

Trailer Roundup: Muramasa

No new anime trailers for everyone today but there is a new eroge trailer which is the next best thing. NitroPlus has posted a full two minute trailer for their upcoming 10th anniversary release ‘FullMetalDaemon MuraMasa’. The strategy/action game is set for release on 10/30 and I don’t care if you have no intention of playing this game; watch this trailer (SFW)! Pretty artwork is a very solid way of getting my attention and this title has it. With the recent deal signed between JASTUSA and NitroPlus, perhaps we’ll see a license for this title sometime in the future?

Trailer Roundup: Soul Eater, 15 Bishoujo Hyouryuuki

Anime trailers were released on both sides of the Pacific today but we’re going to start with the safer one released by Funimation. Earlier today, Funimation released their first promo trailer for the popular series, Soul Eater. Still no word from Funimation regarding a release date for the first box set other than 2010 so in the meantime enjoy 90 seconds of action (with a 2 second break for fan service at about the 60 second mark).

Now for the not so safe stuff; new trailers (NSFW!) were released today for the upcoming anime sex romp ‘15 Bishoujo Hyouryuuki’. I say not so safe because all three of the videos are pretty safe to tag NSFW.  If you’re sensitive or under age you shouldn’t watch because they all feature nudity, oral sex and more traditional beach sex starring girl and guy who is never really seen but apparently has a pretty big… let’s say member since I’m not sure I can get away with saying dick here (oops).  Regardless, if you’re over 18+ (Oh yes, the wonderful honor system) and are desperate to see a few seconds of animated beach action, there they are. Otherwise you can wait for the official release on August 13th.

Trailer Roundup: Oblivion Island

Oblivion Island - Opening 8/22A new trailer has been uploaded to the official site for the upcoming anime movie ‘Oblivion Island’. In the movie the main character Haruka discovers a magical world where all the toys and old items that people outgrow or forget about go to. The fantasy film produced by Production I.G. will be released to theaters in Japan August 22nd. The computer animation in the trailer looks impressive enough but the character design has a Pixar quality to them that turns me off a little. Ignoring that, the story does sound like it’s going to be a lot of fun!
